From the grassroots pitches of Western Sydney to the professional stage, 17-year-old Marcus Savic has taken another significant step in his football journey, making his A-League Men debut for the Western Sydney Wanderers against Macarthur FC.
For the young centre back, the moment marked the culmination of years of hard work, dedication and progression through the Wanderers Academy pathway, as he stepped onto the pitch at Campbelltown Sports Stadium for his first professional appearance.
Introduced by Head Coach Ufuk Talay in the closing stages of the Wanderers’ draw against the Bulls, Savic was handed an opportunity he had been working towards since his earliest days in football.
Speaking to Channel 10 following the milestone, the teenager reflected on the excitement of receiving the call from the sideline.
“Uffie called me over in the 80th minute and I was over the moon. I was like this is the time (to make my debut),” said Savic.
It was a moment that represented far more than a first appearance, highlighting the opportunities available to young footballers progressing through the Wanderers Academy and the club’s continued commitment to developing homegrown talent.
Savic’s journey began at Moorebank Sports Club, where he first developed his love for the game under the guidance of his father, before continuing his development at Marconi Stallions and Football Tec.
His pathway eventually brought him to the Wanderers, where his composure, leadership and determination to improve have seen him emerge as one of the club’s most promising young defenders.
A left-footed centre back recognised for his maturity beyond his years, Savic’s development was rewarded at the beginning of the 2026/27 pre-season when he committed his future to the Red & Black on a two-year deal.
Now, just months later, the teenager has made the leap to professional football, demonstrating the strength of the pathway connecting the Wanderers Academy to the club’s A-League Men squad.
And the milestones are not stopping there.
Savic has also been selected to represent Australia at the upcoming FIFA U-17 World Cup, where he will captain the Subway Joeys on the international stage.
Having previously worn the captain’s armband at the ASEAN U17 Boys Championship, the young defender will once again lead his country against some of the world’s brightest emerging talents.
“It’s so special that I have been trusted as captain and leader of the group. It’s a good step too, so now I just need to perform at the World Cup,” Savic said.
The Joeys will face Argentina, Denmark and Mozambique in their upcoming World Cup fixtures, presenting another invaluable opportunity for Savic to continue his development against international opposition.

From his first steps in grassroots football to pulling on the Red & Black at professional level and captaining his country, Savic’s journey is a proud reflection of the talent emerging from Western Sydney.
At just 17 years of age, his professional debut is only the beginning of what promises to be an exciting journey.
For the Wanderers Academy, it is another moment to celebrate, and another example of a young footballer’s dream becoming a reality.
