Wander Women building momentum ahead of international break

The Western Sydney Wanderers Women head into the November international break with plenty of positives to take from the opening three matches of the 2026/27 A-League Women season, following consecutive victories over Brisbane Roar and Canberra United.

With six points from their opening three fixtures, head coach Geoff Abrahams’ side have shown encouraging signs in the early stages of the campaign, with a new-look squad continuing to develop its combinations and establish its identity on the pitch.

Despite opening the season with a narrow 1-0 defeat to Melbourne Victory at Wanderers Football Park, the Red & Black showed promising signs in their first competitive outing, enjoying periods of possession and pushing for an equaliser against last season’s Grand Finalists.

The response a week later was an impressive one.

Returning to CommBank Stadium for their first double header of the season, the Wanderers overturned an early deficit against Brisbane Roar to secure a convincing 3-1 victory.

Sofia Palywoda brought the Red & Black level before Talia Younis put the hosts ahead from the penalty spot, with Brooke Miller adding a spectacular long-range effort to seal all three points.

The performance highlighted the resilience and attacking quality developing within the squad, providing an important confidence boost heading into their first away fixture of the campaign.

That momentum continued against Canberra United, with the Wanderers producing an assured display to claim a 2-0 victory at McKellar Park.

Milly Bennett made an immediate impact, opening the scoring inside the first minute before setting up Elexa Bahr to double the advantage before the midway point of the first half.

The Wanderers followed their impressive attacking start with a disciplined defensive performance, keeping Canberra at bay to secure their first clean sheet of the season and a second consecutive victory.

Beyond the results, the opening three matches have provided several encouraging signs for Abrahams and his coaching staff.

The contributions of young players, the impact of new arrivals and the growing understanding across the playing group have all been evident, with the Red & Black demonstrating their ability to respond to setbacks and manage different challenges throughout matches.

Importantly, the Wanderers have continued to improve with each outing, combining their attacking intent with greater defensive organisation as the squad builds confidence in its approach.

With two wins, five goals scored and a clean sheet from their opening three matches, the Red & Black now have an opportunity to build on that progress during the international break.

Attention will then turn to Friday 20 November, when the Wanderers return to CommBank Stadium to face Wellington Phoenix in another A-League Women and A-League Men double header.

The Women’s fixture will kick off at 4:50pm, before the Wanderers Men take on Adelaide United at 7:40pm.

Having established a positive foundation in the opening weeks, Abrahams’ side will be looking to carry that momentum into their return to Wanderland and continue their strong start to the campaign.
