NPL 2 Preview: St George FC v Wanderers

Western Sydney Wanderers will be hoping to kickstart their NSW NPL 2 campaign this weekend as they travel to face St George FC.

The Red & Black opened their season with a tough 3-0 loss to defending champions Central Coast Mariners and despite showing some good signs two well-taken goals from the Mariners put the Wanderers on the back foot early.

Although they didn’t bring any points back down the M1, Patrick Zwaanswijk’s side will be better for the test in what was their first game back in the second division since 2019.

While Anthony Lesiotis won’t be available after his red card, Western Sydney will once again be bolstered by the likes of Tass Mourdokoutas, Kosta Grozos, and Ali Auglah.

Their opponents St. George are in a similar position, having suffered a 4-0 loss at the hands of NWS Spirit FC to open their season.

One of Australian football’s most storied clubs, Saints finished last season in ninth position and will be expecting to push for finals in 2021.

Western Sydney will need to be wary of St George striker Emmanuel Gonzalez. The target man notched 5 goals in just 10 games last season and could prove a handful for the Red & Black.

The match kicks-off at 7:00pm at Rockdale Ilinden Sports Centre. Make sure you keep an eye on Twitter for live match coverage.
