Ferris re-signs on professional deal

Western Sydney Wanderers FC have today confirmed the re-signing of defender Gemma Ferris for the upcoming Liberty A-Leagues season on a professional deal.

The 18-year-old defender started her journey at the Red & Black as a train-on player before earning a scholarship contract with the Liberty A-Leagues team last season.

Ferris made her debut in the domestic competition against Newcastle Jets in January this year and went on to make six appearances in the domestic competition.

Looking to build on her performances in the heart of the Wanderers defence, Ferris said she was hoping for a good season in Western Sydney.

“I want to have a good season at the Wanderers and hopefully we can get into Finals,” said Ferris.

“I would also like to be part of the squad for the upcoming Asian Cup.”

Wanderers Liberty A-Leagues head coach Kat Smith spoke highly of Gemma and the re-signing news.

“We have already seen Gemma grab her opportunity with both hands with her introduction to first team football last season,” said Smith.

“(Gemma) has certainly shown enough to be confident about her progression and development in the coming years.

“At the back end of last season, we saw the talented youngster playing with great confidence and no fear, capable of driving forward, picking out passes and producing unpredictable moments of immense quality and with several international appearances for the Young Matildas, we know Gemma will be integral to our success going forward.

“Gemma has achieved a rapid rise in her football over the past few years, and no doubt, having guidance from Clare Hunt had positively influenced her journey, and we see Gemma as a real asset for the Wanderers for years to come.”
