NPL 1 Preview: Wanderers v APIA Leichhardt

The Western Sydney Wanderers NPL 1 side returns to Wanderers Football Park on Saturday afternoon looking to reignite their finals push when they host APIA Leichhardt in Round 24 of the NPL NSW Competition.

With six rounds remaining in the regular season, the Wanderers know every point is crucial as they aim to close the gap to the top six. A difficult run of results has seen the Red & Black claim one victory from their last five outings, leaving them five points outside the finals positions heading into the weekend.

Standing in their way is an APIA Leichhardt side with plenty to play for themselves. Last season’s champions remain firmly in the Premiership race and responded to consecutive defeats with an important victory over Sydney FC last weekend to keep the pressure on league leaders Marconi Stallions. APIA now sit four points off top spot and will be determined to maintain their challenge.

The Wanderers will also be eager to avenge the sides’ previous meeting this season, where APIA ran out convincing 4-1 winners at Lambert Park.

Despite recent results, there have been encouraging signs from the young Wanderers throughout the campaign, with the side continuing to compete against some of the league’s strongest opponents. Back on home turf, the Red & Black will be hoping to produce a response in front of their supporters and keep their finals hopes alive.

The Key Decider: The Midfield Battle

The battle in midfield could prove decisive on Saturday afternoon. APIA have been one of the competition’s most dangerous attacking sides when allowed to dictate possession, while the Wanderers’ energetic young squad will look to disrupt their rhythm and transition quickly on the counter.

If the Wanderers can remain compact defensively and capitalise on their opportunities in transition, they’ll give themselves every chance of claiming a valuable result. However, APIA’s experience and attacking quality mean any lapses in concentration are likely to be punished.

Saturday’s clash promises to be an entertaining contest between two sides with plenty on the line. While APIA are chasing silverware at the top of the table, the Wanderers know a positive result could provide the spark they need for a late-season charge.
