The Western Sydney Wanderers NPL 1 side hits the road on Saturday afternoon as they take on NWS Spirit FC at Christie Park in a clash that could have a major bearing on the race for finals football.
The Wanderers were involved in one of the games of the season last weekend but ultimately came away empty-handed after a dramatic 5-3 defeat to APIA Leichhardt. Jesse Cameron opened the scoring before Awan Lual struck twice in fivefirst-half minutes to hand the Red & Black a 3-1 advantage at the break. However, APIA mounted an impressive second-half comeback to snatch all three points, leaving the Wanderers searching for a response after another encouraging attacking display.
NWS Spirit also enter the fixture looking to bounce back following a 3-1 defeat to UNSW FC. Despite Riku Kobayashi cancelling out the opening goal before half-time, Spirit were unable to contain the home side after the interval as their three-match winning run came to an end.
With just a handful of rounds remaining, both sides know the importance of every point. The Wanderers remain firmly inthe hunt for a top-six finish, while Spirit will be looking to strengthen their own finals aspirations on home soil.
The visitors will once again look towards the in-form Awan Lual after his two-goal display against APIA. Spirit, meanwhile, possess plenty of quality through Riku Kobayashi, Shoki Yoshida and Aiden Mostofi, who have all played key roles throughout the campaign.
Key Decider: Which Defence Responds?
Both teams conceded three or more goals last weekend after strong opening periods, highlighting defensive lapses thatproved costly. The Wanderers showed they can trouble any side going forward, while Spirit have also been among the league’s more dangerous attacking outfits at Christie Park.
If either side can tighten up defensively while maintaining their attacking threat, they’ll give themselves every chanceof claiming a crucial three points in what shapes as an entertaining encounter.
