NPL 1 Wrap: Sydney United emerge as winners in goalfest against Wanderers

The Western Sydney Wanderers NPL NSW side were on the wrong side of a goalfest at Wanderers Football Park, with Sydney United emerging 4-3 winners in their Sunday afternoon clash in the Western Sydney sunshine.

The Wanderers led 3-1 with 20 minutes to go, but two goals to Patrick Antelmi and a 90th minute winner from Devante Clut saw the away side walk away with all three points.

The home side got off to a bright start, with a short free-kick routine almost causing United to score an own goal after just three minutes.

The Wanderers had the better of much of the first half, and they scored a deserved goal just after half an hour.

Marcus Younis showed great footwork to make space from his defender on the right, before unleashing a strong finish past Danijel Nizic to put his side in front.

The visitors would score an equaliser against the run of play just before half-time though, as Adrian Vlastelica embarked on a run from centre back, teeing up Chris who finished well past Lawrence Caruso.

The Wanderers retook the lead 9 minutes after the break, and it was a fantastic captain’s contribution from George Antonis, whose first touch helped create the play before he rifled a shot from distance into the top corner.

A lazy challenge from a United defender on substitute Teng Kuol gave the Wanderers the chance to extend their lead from the spot, and they did just that as Nathaniel Blair scored his third goal of the season.

But an experienced Sydney United side hit back almost instantly through a well taken Antelmi strike, and this gave them strong momentum that they used to full effect.

Antelmi scored again in the 83rd minute from close range when he turned home a low cross, and then Clu was in the right place at the right time in the 90th minute when he poked the ball home on the follow up after Caruso saved well from the initial shot.

The Wanderers look to claim their second win of the season on Sunday when they travel to face the Wollongong Wolves.
