NPL 1 Wrap: Wanderers produce late fightback to claim point at Wanderers Football Park

The Western Sydney Wanderers showed tremendous character on Saturday afternoon, coming from two goals down to earn a dramatic 3-3 draw against Manly United, with Awan Lual’s stoppage-time strike capping off a spirited comeback.

In an action-packed contest at Wanderers Football Park, the Red & Black found themselves trailing 3-1 after the visitors capitalised on their opportunities, but a determined second-half display saw Lachlan Sattout reduce the deficit before Lual’s second goal of the afternoon rescued a valuable point deep into added time.

The Red and Black settled into the match well and were rewarded after 16 minutes when relentless pressing forced Manly into a costly mistake. Alaat Abdul-Rahman intercepted possession high up the pitch, allowing Lual to pounce onthe loose ball and slot home from close range to give the hosts an early advantage.

The lead was short-lived, however, as Manly responded almost immediately through Jesse Piriz, who rose highest to convert Kakeru Ono’s floated free-kick.

The visitors gradually grew into the contest and completed the turnaround before the break. Piriz turned provider with a dangerous delivery across goal, where Luke Nieuwenhof arrived to finish from inside the six-yard box and hand Manly aone goal cushion heading into the interval.

Looking to wrestle back momentum after half-time, the Wanderers nearly found an instant response when Abdul-Rahman’s bicycle kick forced a save from Mackenzie Syron.

Instead, it was the visitors who struck next. Lucas Sinnott denied the initial effort, but Samuel Griffiths reacted quickest to the rebound to extend Manly’s lead.

The Wanderers refused to let the contest slip away and continued to push numbers forward in search of a way back into the match.

The reward arrived just past the hour mark. Clever combination play between Johnny Pavlovic and Lual carved open the Manly defence before Lual slipped an inviting pass into the path of Lachlan Sattout, who made no mistake with his finish to halve the deficit.

Buoyed by the goal, the Wanderers continued to apply pressure, pinning the visitors deep inside their own half as the clock ticked towards full-time.

Their persistence paid off in dramatic fashion during stoppage time. Pavlovic’s driving run into the area created theopening before he cut the ball back for Lual, who swept a first-time finish

beyond the goalkeeper to complete his brace and spark celebrations among the home supporters.

The Wanderers stood resolute through the closing moments to ensure they were rewarded for their resilience with a share of the points.
