NPL 1 Wrap: Wanderers put on masterclass against Sydney United

An attacking masterclass from the Western Sydney Wanderers NPL 1 side has seen them hit Sydney United for six in a 6-3 win at Sydney United Sports Centre.

Ariath Piol scored a double, whilst Zac Sapsford and Nathaneal Blair both starred with top performances in what was the sides best win of the season so far.

After a tight opening 20 minutes when the home side had more of the ball, the Wanderers had the first chance of the game when Piol cut inside and shot at the near post, forcing a good reaction stop from Luke Cukar.

He wouldn’t be able to deny Teng Kuol minutes later when the centre back rose highest from a corner and headed home to give the Wanderers the lead.

The advantage was doubled in the 42nd minute when Piol cut inside and once again shot for the near post, but this time the ball squeezed past Cukar and into the back of the net.

Sydney United made a raft of changes at half time, and it paid dividends as the deficit was halved in the 57th minute when substitute Glen Trifiro finished coolly past Lawrence Caruso.

The two goal lead was restored three minutes later, as Blair capitalised on a slip from Adrian Vlastelica to slip the ball to Piol, who tapped home into an open goal.

Blair then turned Vlastelica inside out in the 70th minute and fired a great shot past Cukar to score the Wanderers fourth, before Patrick Antelmi scored for the home side with a first-time finish three minutes later.

Sapsford then scored the pick of the bunch for the Wanderers, as he turned away from a defender and from an acute angle lobbed the ball over Cukar and into the far corner of the goal.

Trifiro scored his second with a well taken free kick in the 85th minute, but it would truly be the Wanderers’ night as just minutes after, substitutes Edmun Haddad and Tommy Edmonds combined for the latter to score from close range to seal a crucial and well deserved three points.
