NPL 1 Wrap: Wanderers thrash Bulls

A five star performance from our NPL NSW side has seen them demolish Bulls FC Academy on Saturday afternoon with a 5-0 win at Sydney United Sports Centre.

Zac Sapsford stole the show with two goals and an assist, whilst Alex Badolato also chipped in with a goal and an assist in a match where the Wanderers dominated from start to finish.

The scoring began just eight minutes into the match when Marcus Younis pulled off a brilliant bit of skill to get past his marker on the wing, before cutting the ball back to Badolato, who swept the ball home from close range.

The Wanderers put the Bulls under relentless pressure in the first half, and could have had a hatful of goals were it not for the efforts of Bulls goalkeeper Alexander Robinson, who pulled off several good stops to deny the Red & Black.

But he was powerless to stop Sapsford’s strong header in the 39th minute, as he lost his marker and got on the end of a Badolato corner to give the Wanderers a deserved two goal lead heading into the break.

The side continued their relentless charge in the second half, where Sapsford scored his second goal of the match with a truly delightful long range strike, as he cut inside onto his right foot and curled a superb shot into the top corner, with Robinson powerless to stop the effort.

The Bulls did get a penalty in the 57th minute after a foul in the box, but Jack Gibson was able to stand tall and stop Jed Drew’s penalty, helping preserve a well earned clean sheet.

Sapsford then found the overlapping run of Aidan Simmons, who then calmly finished past Robinson for the side’s fourth goal in the 80th minute, before substitute Adam Bugarija scored a wonderful fifth goal when he rifled a shot from outside the box into the top corner in the 87th minute, putting the exclamation mark on a complete performance.

The win saw the Wanderers keep a third clean sheet of the season, and more importantly, saw the side move out of the relegation zone and into 14th place. It was the perfect preparation for a mammoth Sydney Derby next weekend.
