NPL Preview: Wanderers vs Mounties

The Western Sydney Wanderers NPL 2 team will be looking to end the first half of the season as league leaders when they face Mounties at Sydney United Sports Centre on Saturday night.

With the second most prolific attack in the division, Mounties are expected to be a stern test for the Red & Black on Saturday.

Mounties have Hyundai A-League experience in the form of Jacob Poscoliero and Peter Triantis, as well as former Wanderers Academy goalkeeper Jack Groeneveld.

Although they are currently in seventh place, the south-west Sydney outfit will be confident after defeating Spirit FC 2-0 last weekend.

It’s been a strong start to the year for the Red & Black in both NPL 2 1st Grade and U20s with both sides leading their leagues by one point heading into the weekend.

The U20s defence has been particularly impressive, keeping five clean sheets in 12 games. Central defender Thomas McPherson has played in every match for the U20s and is a big reason why the side has the stingiest defence in the competition.

McPherson joined the Wanderers Academy from Marconi Stallions and was a part of the squad that finished the 2018 season as U20 Champions.

Ashton Ahluwalia is another member of the U20s backline who has caught the eye recently.

Comfortable at both right back and left back, Ahluwalia played for the Wanderers Academy side that reached last year’s U18 Grand Final.

This year, the former Football NSW Institute player has been promoted to the U20s, playing in 10 out of the 12 games so far.

Entry to this match is FREE for all Wanderers Members.
