NPL Women’s Preview: Wanderers v Northern Tigers

The Western Sydney Wanderers NPL Women’s side returns to Wanderers Football Park on Sunday afternoon looking to strengthen their position inside the top four when they host the Northern Tigers in Round 19 of the NPL NSW Women’s competition.

The Red & Black will be eager to return to winning ways after being forced to settle for a point against GladesvilleRavens in their last outing. Despite controlling large periods of the contest, the Wanderers were unable to find the breakthrough as the match finished scoreless.

While the result was a frustrating one for a side chasing the teams above them, there were plenty of positives to take from the performance. The Wanderers dominated proceedings throughout the afternoon, registering an incredible 39 shots as they relentlessly searched for a winner. Although they couldn’t find a way past a determined Gladesvilledefence, the volume of chances created highlighted the attacking intent that has become a hallmark of the young Wanderers side this season.

With only a handful of rounds remaining, Sunday’s fixture presents another important opportunity to build momentum. The Wanderers have consistently shown maturity beyond their years throughout the campaign, refusing to let setbacks derail their progress and continuing to play with confidence as the pressure of the finals race intensifies. Another strong performance this weekend would not only keep the Red & Black in touch with the teams above them but further strengthen their position inside the top four.

Standing in their way is a Northern Tigers side looking to finish the season strongly. While the visitors have won just oneof their past five matches, they have proven to be a difficult team to break down throughout the campaign and will be determined to frustrate the Wanderers once again.

The Wanderers will take confidence from the opportunities they’ve continued to create in recent weeks. Their fluidattacking football, led by a young and exciting group, has consistently caused problems for opposition defences, and they’ll be hoping to convert that creativity into goals in front of their home supporters on Sunday afternoon.

The Key Decider: Turning chances into goals.

After creating 39 shots against Gladesville Ravens, the Wanderers know their ability to generate opportunities isn’t in question. The challenge this weekend will be making those chances count against another well-organised defensive side. If the Red & Black can maintain the same attacking intensity while showing a clinical edge in front of goal, they’ll give themselves every chance of returning to the winners’ circle and continuing their push towards the finals.
