The Western Sydney Wanderers NPL Women’s side were unable to overturn a two-goal deficit on Sunday afternoon, falling 2-1 to the Northern Tigers at Wanderers Football Park.
The Wanderers started brightly, with Allyssa Ng Saad forcing an early corner as the Red & Black looked to make a fast start. Amelia Bennett also caused problems down the right flank, delivering a pair of dangerous crosses, while Talia Younis helped spark attacking transitions as the home side looked to break forward.
Defensively, the Wanderers were tested throughout the opening half. Anabella Keep produced a crucial interception to deny Lily McMahon before Aimee Hall made an excellent close-range save to keep the scores level.
Despite those efforts, the visitors broke the deadlock just before the half-hour mark when Wilson reacted quickest to a goalmouth scramble to give Northern Tigers a 1-0 lead.
The Wanderers finished the half strongly, with Zumaya going close from outside the area, but entered the break trailing by a single goal.
The Red & Black began the second half with renewed intent, as Ng Saad saw an early effort blocked behind for a corner. However, Northern Tigers extended their advantage shortly after when Cartwright headed home to make it 2-0.
To their credit, the Wanderers continued to push forward in search of a response. Bennett was involved in anotherpromising attack after combining with Younis and Karaberis, while Ng Saad and Zumaya both tested the visitors’ defence as the pressure began to build.
The Red and Black’s persistence was rewarded late in the match when Talia Younis found the near post from a tight angle to halve the deficit and set up a tense finish.
The Wanderers continued to press in the closing stages, with Younis heading on target from a Bradshaw cross before Khoshaba delivered one final ball into the area in stoppage time.
Despite their late surge, the visitors held firm to claim a 2-1 victory.
The Wanderers will now turn their attention to next week’s clash with the Bulls as they look to bounce back.
