Popovic: History is always there to be broken

Popovic: History is always there to be broken

Despite Brisbane’s remarkable record in finals football at Suncorp Stadium, Tony Popovic feels that his side has what it takes to create another piece of history.

The Roar have won all nine of their finals football matches at home and are unbeaten against the Wanderers this season; records Popovic is hoping to snap.

“History is always there to be broken,” he said.

“We’ve managed that many times in our short history, we hope that tomorrow night is another one of those occasions.”

Brisbane Roar

Given where both teams finished on the ladder and Brisbane’s record against Brisbane this season, the Red & Black willl arguably enter the match as but Popovic feels its not so clear cut.

“I’m sure the perception would be that Brisbane are at home and they should be the favourites to go through.

“Our history would suggest though that could be very different.

“Brisbane want to win and go further in the competition and so do we.

“This year we haven’t managed to beat them but we’ve had three fantastic matches.

“This time, we’d like to play a great game against them and turn it in our favour and get through to the next round.”

Brisbane Roar

The two sides last met in January at Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane coming out 2-1 winners with a last-gasp Brett Holman goal, though it’s a match Popovic says was a turning point of sorts for the Wanderers’ season.

“I think that was the start of the turn for us.

“We played very well that day and it was a very good match. It could have gone either way and Brisbane got a goal in injury time.

“We expect another close game and it could go either way but we’re ready for it and our fans are ready for this.

“This is where you want to be at the business end of the season and we have an opportunity to progress in the finals.

“We’ll give it our all.”
