OPTA Data have crunched the numbers ahead of tonight’s match between Australia and Canada in the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
- Canada and Australia will face each other for the second time at the FIFA Women’s World Cup, following a 2-2 draw in their final group stage game at the 2007 tournament.
- Canada are undefeated against teams from Asia at the FIFA Women’s World Cup (W3 D2), keeping a clean sheet in two of their last three such fixtures.
- Australia won their most recent matchup with a team from the CONCACAF region at the FIFA Women’s World Cup (4-1 v Jamaica in 2019), having been winless against such opposition in the competition before that victory (D1 L2).
- Canada have won their final group game at just one of the previous seven FIFA Women’s World Cup tournaments they have participated in (D2 L4), with that victory coming against Japan in 2003 (3-1) going on to reach the semi-finals at that edition.
- Canada (W1 D1) will attempt to remain unbeaten in the group stage of a FIFA Women’s World Cup for just a second time, after 2015 (W1 D2). They have kept a clean sheet in five of their last eight group stage games in the competition.
- Australia will attempt to qualify for the knockout stages, a fate that has been achieved by all the previous hosts of the FIFA Women’s World Cup before this edition. They lost their last game, 3-2 against Nigeria, but haven’t lost consecutive games in the group stage since a run of three defeats between 1999 and 2003.
- Australia have scored in 25 of their 28 games at the FIFA Women’s World Cup (89.3%), of all teams to have competed in more than one edition, only USA (90.4% – 47/52) have scored in a higher share of their matches. However, Australia have kept a clean sheet in only 11% of their 28 games in the FIFA Women’s World Cup (3/28).
- Canada’s Jordyn Huitema and Australia’s Caitlin Foord are both leading their teams with 11 shots so far in the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 but they are yet to score.
- Against Republic of Ireland on MD2, Canada’s Adriana Leon netted her first goal at the FIFA Women’s World Cup in what is her ninth appearance at the competition. She has now scored 10 goals under Bev Priestman in all competitions, more than any other player during her tenure.
- Caitlin Foord and Emily van Egmond – who combined for Australia’s opening goal against Nigeria last time out – have each made 14 appearances at the FIFA Women’s World Cup, just one short of the competition record for the Matildas held by Lisa De Vanna (15).
