Melbourne Victory have secured a 2-0 win over Western Sydney Wanderers at CommBank Stadium, a result that extends their push for a home elimination final and brings a difficult season to a close for the Wanderers.
In a match that remained goalless through a tense first half, both sides struggled to create clear chances, with the game opening up after the break as Victory proved more clinical when it mattered.
The Wanderers had their moments before the interval, with Brandon Borrello denied from close range and Denis Genreau coming agonisingly close with a lifted effort that struck the post after catching the defence and goalkeeper Jordan Holmes out of position. Anthony Pantazopoulos was on hand to clear the danger.
Western Sydney thought they had taken the lead through 19-year-old Atiya Waraga, finishing from Bozhidar Kraev’s delivery, but the goal was ruled out following a VAR review for offside, adding to the frustration on a night where margins felt decisive.
Victory broke the deadlock in the 71st minute through Santos, who capitalised on a turnover deep in Wanderers territory, driving forward and finishing past Holmes at the near post to give the visitors the advantage.
The night then took a worrying turn when Alex Gersbach was forced from the field after sustaining a blow to the face, requiring a concussion substitution shortly after collapsing to the ground.
As the Wanderers searched for a response, frustration grew. Ryan Fraser and Dylan Scicluna both struck the woodwork within seconds of each other late in the match, underlining how close Western Sydney came without being able to find an equaliser.
Deep into injury time, Nikos Vergos sealed the result for Victory, with his shot deflecting past Holmes off a Wanderers defender to make it 2-0.
The defeat confirms the end of Western Sydney Wanderers’ season, concluding a campaign that finishes in disappointment and falling short of the standards the club expects. It also marks Gary van Egmond’s final match in charge of the side.
