Wanderers faithful will be treated to a smorgasbord of football in Western Sydney this round, with our Hyundai A-League, Westfield W-League and Foxtel National Youth League sides all playing home fixtures this weekend.
It’s a rare occurrence and one that Red & Black fans should definitely make the most of.
Following Friday night’s huge White Ribbon clash against the Roar, attention turns to Marconi Stadium on Saturday where our Westfield W-League and Foxtel National Youth League sides will be squaring off against Brisbane Roar and Sydney FC respectively.
First up at 3pm is Rich Byrne’s Westfield W-League outfit who kick-started their season with a much-deserved 2-1 win over Adelaide United last weekend.
Having been unlucky not to pick up points in their opening two games of the season, the Wander Women put on an impressive attacking display to overcome the Lady Reds.
American import striker Katie Stengel opened her account for the season while fellow countrywomen Paige Nielsen netted a dramatic winner five minutes from time to seal the three points.
The team will be looking to make it back-to-back wins against a steely Brisbane Roar outfit who suffered their first loss of the weekend with a 1-0 defeat against Canberra United.
Boasting the likes of Matildas Clare Polkinghorne and Katrina Gorry, the Roar will provide a stern test for what is a young but hungry Wanderers squad.
Immediately after the Westfield W-League clash at 6pm, it’s Sydney Derby time in the Foxtel National Youth League.
Trevor Morgan’s side will be searching for their first win of the season following the Round 1 loss to the Newcastle Jets and last weekend’s 1-1 stalemate with the Central Coast Mariners.
The Sky Blues are the competition’s reigning champions and with a large number of players from both sides having contested the PlayStation 4 NSW NPL 2 Grand Final in September, it’s sure to be a game fought at the highest intensity.
The Wanderers will again look to Mario Shabow to lead from the front with the local boy having netted three times in the opening two games of the season.
It was his effort that secured a point last week and if the youngster continues his rich vein of form, Tony Popovic could feel compelled to give Shabow a Hyundai A-League run sooner rather than later.
