The Western Sydney Wanderers have made their third key signing ahead of the Westfield W-League, coaxing former Matildas legend Joey Burgess out of retirement.
A bona fide Western Sydney girl, Burgess grew up in Campbelltown, played the majority of her football for teams in Western Sydney and will now represent her home town on the national stage.
With head coach Rich Byrnes’ philosophy of recruiting players with a winning-mentality to the club, Burgess’ record speaks for itself.
The winger-turned midfielder has 40 caps for the Matildas, played in the AFC Asian Cup, played in the FIFA World Cup and has won the Westfield W-League Championship: in fact featuring in an incredible four grand finals in her five seasons.
Bringing a legend out of retirement is always an exciting move, especially when the legend is a hometown hero, with Burgess excited to be back.
“After retiring from the Westfield W-League last time I always regretted not finishing up with my home team and where I grew up”, explained Burgess.
“I grew up in Campbelltown and have played for Western Sydney teams almost my entire life so it’s exciting to be representing my region on the national stage.”
