Western Sydney Wanderers FC have continued their stunning run of form in the Ninja A-League, claiming a famous 1-0 victory over league leaders Melbourne City on Wednesday night at ctrl:cyber Pitch.
In a performance defined by resilience and belief the Wanderers secured their third consecutive win, handing City their first defeat in weeks and underlining the confidence growing within the group.
The opening half saw Melbourne City control possession, but the Wanderers remained disciplined and composed, absorbing pressure and staying committed to their defensive structure.
That persistence was rewarded in memorable fashion late in the first half.
From a rare Wanderers corner, Talia Younis’ dangerous in-swinging delivery caused havoc at the far post, with the ball ricocheting off City defender Aideen Keane and into the back of the net to give the Red & Black a shock, and deserved, lead.
City pushed hard for a response after the break, introducing attacking reinforcements in search of an equaliser. Captain Rebekah Stott went close with a long-range effort, while Deven Jackson and Golden Boot leader Holly McNamara both threatened late.
But the Wanderers stood firm. Goalkeeper Sham Khamis produced crucial saves when required, while a resolute defensive effort ensured the visitors held on for a memorable clean-sheet victory.
The result sees the Wanderers climb to 10th on the Ninja A-League ladder, moving clear of their cross-town rivals and continuing a surge that now includes three wins on the bounce – a remarkable reward for the group’s hard work, belief and togetherness.
The Wanderers will now turn their attention to their next Ninja A-League fixture against Adelaide United, with the Round 16 clash moved to Sunday 8 February due to forecasted heat. The match will kick off at 7:00pm at Wanderers Football Park, as the Wander Women look to carry their momentum home and push for a fourth consecutive victory.
