The Western Sydney Wanderers NPL Women’s side opened their campaign in impressive fashion on Sunday afternoon, securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Illawarra Stingrays.
In a tightly contested encounter between two sides eager to begin the season on a positive note, the Wanderers showedcomposure, defensive resilience and attacking quality to claim all three points on the road.
The opening stages were played at a lively tempo, with both teams probing for an early breakthrough. Illawarra looked to use their pace in wide areas to stretch the Wanderers defence, while the visitors settled into the match by controllingpossession and looking to spring forward quickly when opportunities arose.
The decisive moment arrived in the 22nd minute following a swift Wanderers counter-attack. Alyssa Ng Saad initiatedthe move, flicking the ball forward into space before Frida Karaberis collected possession and drove at the Stingrays backline. Spotting Ng Saad’s run, Karaberis threaded a perfectly weighted pass in behind the defence.
Ng Saad reacted first, racing onto the through ball and using her pace to outstrip the chasing defenders before calmly finishing low at the near post to give the Wanderers a deserved 1-0 lead.
Buoyed by the opener, the Wanderers continued to press forward and nearly doubled their advantage before the break.Clever movement in the attacking third created several promising openings, forcing the Stingrays defence to remain alert as the visitors looked to extend their lead.
Illawarra responded after the interval with renewed energy, pushing numbers forward in search of an equaliser and attempting to pin the Wanderers deep in their own half. The Stingrays produced several dangerous moments around the penalty area, but the Wanderers backline held firm under pressure.
The visitors remained a threat on the counter-attack throughout the second half, with Ng Saad continuing to cause problems with her pace and movement. The Wanderers created a number of promising chances, forcing Stingraysgoalkeeper Kiara Rochaix into several important saves to keep her side within touching distance.
Despite the late pressure from the hosts, the Wanderers maintained their discipline and composure in defence, closingdown space and limiting clear opportunities on goal as the match entered its final stages.
