NPL Women’s Wrap: Wanderers claim valuable win over Hills United

The Western Sydney Wanderers NPL Women side continued their encouraging start to the season with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Hills United at Valentine Sports Park, producing another composed performance to collect an important three points away from home.

Facing a Hills side eager to respond after a difficult opening to their campaign, the Wanderers were forced to remain patient early as the match settled into a competitive rhythm.

Both teams looked to establish control through midfield, but it was the Wanderers who gradually began to find space in wider areas and create the more threatening attacking moments.

Their breakthrough arrived in the 20th minute through a move that reflected the side’s growing confidence in possession.

After building play well through the middle third, the Wanderers shifted the ball wide before delivering an inviting cross into the area, where Alyssa McKenzie timed her run perfectly to arrive at the back post and finish calmly, continuing herstrong recent impact in front of goal.

The Red and Black took confidence from the opener and looked increasingly dangerous whenever they moved forward with speed, with Hills forced to defend deep for long stretches as the Wanderers pressed for a second before the break.

That second goal arrived shortly after half-time and again came from sustained attacking pressure.

A dangerous delivery into the box caused uncertainty inside the Hills defence, with Olivia Sloan ultimately turning the ball into her own net under pressure as the Wanderers doubled their advantage and gained further control of the contest.

With a two-goal cushion, the Wanderers looked composed and organised for much of the second half, managing possession well and limiting clear opportunities for the home side. Their defensive shape remained disciplined as Hills searched for a way back into the match.

The home side did find a lifeline in the 68th minute through an individual moment of quality from Erin Tavares. Winning the ball high up the pitch, she drove directly at the Wanderers defence before unleashing a powerful long-range strike that flew into the net and reduced the margin.

That goal lifted Hills in the closing stages, forcing the Wanderers to withstand late pressure as the hosts pushed for an equaliser.

However, the visitors remained composed defensively, dealing well with the final period of pressure to see out the result and secure another valuable victory.

The win continued the Wanderers’ strong early momentum, with the side again showing maturity both in possession and in managing key moments across the ninety minutes.
