The Western Sydney Wanderers NPL Women side return home this weekend looking to continue their strong start to the campaign when they host Macarthur Rams at Wanderers Football Park.
The Wanderers come into the clash with confidence after securing an important 2-1 away victory over Hills United, a performance that once again highlighted the side’s ability to control key moments while showing resilience when challenged late in matches.
Alyssa McKenzie opened the scoring with another well-taken finish at the back post before sustained second-half pressure forced an own goal that ultimately proved decisive in securing all three points. Their defensive discipline was then tested late, but the side held firm to see out another valuable result.
McKenzie’s recent form has added another important dimension to the Wanderers’ attack. After again making a decisive contribution last weekend, her movement in wide areas and ability to arrive in dangerous positions continues to give the side another threat alongside an already energetic attacking group.
This weekend’s opponents arrive after pushing one of the competition’s strongest sides all the way.
Macarthur Rams were narrowly beaten 2-1 by APIA Leichhardt last round but produced one of the more impressive stretches of football seen against the ladder leaders so far this season.
After trailing at half-time, the Rams responded strongly through an outstanding Abbie Puckett equaliser before remaining dangerous throughout the second half before APIA eventually found the winner.
The Key Decider: Shutting out the opposition
For the Wanderers, the key decider will be maintaining control when momentum shifts.
Macarthur showed against APIA that they can grow into matches and become increasingly dangerous when allowed time to build confidence, particularly through quick transitions and second-phase attacks.
Managing those periods and continuing to press with intent will be crucial if the Wanderers are to dictate the contest.
Despite remaining undefeated, the Wanderers will also be aiming to grow in confidence when in control of matches and become more ruthless in key moments.
While recent performances have delivered positive results, there have been periods where opponents have been allowed opportunities to work their way back into contests after the Wanderers had established control.
Turning strong passages into sustained authority and closing down those moments earlier will be another important step in the group’s development.
Creating sustained pressure early may prove important against a Rams side that defended strongly for long periods last weekend before finding confidence as the match opened up.
Defensively, concentration across the full ninety minutes remains another major focus. While the Wanderers have looked increasingly organised, Macarthur’s ability to create moments from limited opportunities means lapses in concentration can quickly be punished.
With momentum building and confidence growing across the squad, the Wanderers now have the opportunity to strengthen their early-season position against a Macarthur side certain to arrive determined after an encouraging performance against top opposition.
