New Wanderers signing Roly Bonevacia had a double celebration on Sunday – his side won their first season opener in history on the day he celebrated his 26th birthday.
Bonevacia, an off-season recruit from Wellington Phoenix, was one of a number of new faces that impressed in the Wanderers’ season opening 2-1 win at Spotless over a fast-finishing Perth Glory.
“It feels good. We had a tough week because the coach left. But for now we won. So it feels good especially on my birthday,” Bonevacia told Fox Sports.
“We have a strong team and we’re strong together,” the 26-year old Dutchman added, referring to a week in which the playing group had to regroup following the exit of foundation coach Tony Popovic.
Club captain Robbie Cornthwaite said making history this season was something he challenged his side to do before the season opener on Sunday.
“I spoke to the boys about making history this year. We haven’t won a Grand Final, and into the semi finals of the FFA Cup which is a bit of history.
“And we said we wanted to win the first game of the season,” he told Fox Sports.
“So if we can keep ticking off a bit of history and hopefully we can end up with a bit of silverware at the end of the season.”
He added his side can learn from the latter stages of the game in which Glory almost pulled back the deficit.
“Perhaps if Oriol [Riera] had put his chance away we could’ve put the game to bed. So plenty to improve on but a positive performance all in all.”
