Brillante: We just kept our foot on the throttle

Wanderers midfielder Josh Brillante on the Red & Black’s history-making performance against Western United.

The result against United saw the Wanderers make history with no club having scored more than five first-half goals in a single Isuzu UTE A-League match in history.

Two braces from Lachie Brook and Nicolas Milanovic, as well as a goal from Marcelo, put Western United to the sword with midfielder Josh Brillante speaking highly of the performance following the match.

“It’s pretty hard to describe, these (results) don’t come around too often,” said Brillante to 10BOLD.

“It’s nice to get a win like that, 5-0 at home, with no goals conceded which to me is more important.

“I think it was a top performance, we started well last week but we just couldn’t score the goals we needed and I think we made up for it.”

It was a relentless performance by the Wanderers who opened up the scoring in just the sixth minute before making it five at the break.

The first-half was arguably some of the Red & Black’s best football in seasons with Brillante crediting the performance to the team’s persistent attitude.

“I think in the first half we just didn’t let off, we just kept our foot on the throttle and that’s what kept us going,” explained Brillante.

“We knew in the second half they would come out harder so we had some more work to do, we had to try and be on our game.

“They made it difficult for us but I think we did well in the end.”

The Wanderers will now switch their focus to their next match, Newcastle Jets, where they will be looking to not only back up their performance but also collect their first three points away from home this season.

“It’s always a difficult task, after winning good games, it’s always backing it up after,” said Brillante.

“We got a lot of work to do in training and we’ve got to get back to working hard.

“We will enjoy tonight, put it behind us and go again.”
