NRMA Insurance Western Sydney Wanderers captain Michael Beauchamp has signed with the Hyundai A-League club for the 2013/14 season, it was announced today.
Beauchamp, 31, who played his junior football in Sydney-s Western suburbs, said it was great to be staying at the Wanderers.
“It really means a lot to me to get another opportunity to play under (coach) Tony Popovic and be part of the squad,” Beauchamp said.
“It has been a great season so far and there is more to come.
“What is happening here at the Wanderers is something special and it is terrific to be part of it for next season.
“It is a credit to the club, coaching staff and the boys to get the results we have achieved and to get out and represent the West of Sydney like we have.
“We have something that does not come around very often.
“We came together very quickly and we have developed a winning mentality and that is driving everything at the club.”
Central defender Beauchamp joins fellow member of the stingiest defence in the Hyundai A-League, goalkeeper Ante Covic, in committing to the future of the club in the past week.
Midfielder Mateo Poljak also recently signed for 2013/14.
Popovic said Beauchamp had shown real leadership qualities in the Wanderers- first year.
“Michael has been outstanding for us in defence this season,” he said.
“We always felt he would be a very good leader and he is showing that as captain on and off the field.
“We are very pleased he has signed for another season and even at his age, and with his experience, he is improving all the time.”
Executive chairman Lyall Gorman said Beauchamp was a priority signing for the Wanderers.
“Michael walks and talks what this club is about,” Gorman said.
“He is from the heart of Western Sydney and he leads the club by example in his calm, determined and professional manner.
“His game has gone to a new level under Tony-s coaching and week in and week out he is one of our most consistent players.”
The Wanderers- next home game is against Melbourne Victory FC at 6.15pm on January 1 at Parramatta Stadium.
Kids will be allowed in for free for all Wanderers games in January.
