Kraev and Bulgaria fall 2-1 to Ireland in Nations League Playoff

In the first leg of their Nations League relegation play-off, the Republic of Ireland secured a 2-1 victory over Bulgaria at the Hristo Botev Stadium in Plovdiv. The result places Ireland in a favourable position ahead of the return leg in Dublin.

Bulgaria struck early, with Marin Petkov finding the net in the 6th minute, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead.

However, Ireland responded effectively. Finn Azaz scored his first international goal in the 21st minute, leveling the match at 1-1. Matt Doherty then headed in the winning goal in the 42nd minute, giving Ireland a 2-1 advantage.

Wanderer Bozhidar Kraev, who came off the bench during the match, contributed to Bulgaria’s efforts in seeking an equalizer. Despite their attempts, Bulgaria couldn’t overcome Ireland’s lead.

The second leg of the playoff is scheduled for Sunday 23 March 2025 at Aviva Stadium in Dublin, where Ireland will aim to maintain their advantage and preserve their League B status.
