Intense competition in the NRMA Insurance Western Sydney Wanderers squad will push the form team of the Hyundai A-League to even bigger things.

Coach Tony Popovic said the players were not content with second spot and a strong competition for playing positions in the team would keep them improving.

He said there was no complacency despite the team-s six straight wins.

“We have a very fit squad in terms of numbers there is a lot of competition for places,” Popovic said.

“The players that are in there want to stay there and the players that are not are doing their very best to get in there and that is keeping the players in the first eleven on their toes.

“It is a healthy environment and an environment that the players are driving.”

Popovic said the team had trained extremely well for the match against Perth Glory at Parramatta Stadium on Saturday and they were looking forward to playing front of their supporters again.

“It is nice to be back at Parramatta as we have not been here for a while,” Popovic said.

“You can see in the players that they are really looking forward to playing in front of a large crowd once again.

“We are looking forward to getting the huge backing and the fantastic vocal support and the players want to put in a good performance for them.”

Captain Michael Beauchamp said the club believed they were set for big things from day one.

“We have trained hard for the whole season and we knew what we could achieve this this year,” Beauchamp said.

“We sat down at Brisbane very early doors and had a chat about what we wanted to achieve as a team and I think we are slowly getting there and to be sitting second on the table I don-t think it is something that we didn-t believe could happen.

“We had the squad there and we knew the way ‘Popa’ wanted us to play and we set about putting it onto the park and it took a few rounds to get there and but it is obviously all coming together now.”

Perth would be dangerous coming off a shock win over the Central Coast Mariners last week.

“We have a game plan that we are going to take out there and we will concentrate on our own game,” he said.

“We watched the game against Mariners and they got a lot of possession in the middle of the park a bit more freely there.

“We don-t allow any teams to have that freedom and because any player can cause you damage.

“We are going out there with the frame of mind to defend as we have been in the front line and if we do that we will get the three points.”

The Wanderers- next home game is against Perth Glory FC at Parramatta Stadium on Saturday at 5.30pm.
