The Western Sydney Wanderers NPL 1 Women’s team have suffered a 1-0 defeat to Sydney University, with an early mistake proving to be the difference.
The Western Sydney Wanderers NPL 1 Women’s side fell 1-0 to Sydney Uni at the Sydney University Football Ground in a match defined by missed opportunities for the Red and Black. A costly mistake just before halftime led to the game’s only goal.
The Wanderers welcomed Izzy Wilson, Alyssa Mckenze and Olivia Vanderlaan into the line-up as they looked to avoid two defeats on the trot following a disappointing loss to the Bulls FC Academy.
The game started in typical Wanderers fashion as they dominated possession and looked to get on the front foot early. McKenzie had an early chance in the 22nd minute of the game but found the side netting.
Vanderlaan then found herself on the end of a Miriam Zumaya cross but failed to convert her one on one as her strike was taken directly at the keeper.
As the Red & Black headed into added time, Alvina Khoshaba was unable to clear a Sydney Uni cross, which fell to the feet of striker Maddison Van Dijk. Van Dijk calmly rolled the ball past Aimee Hall, giving the University side a crucial lead going into the break.
The second half began with a wave of pressure from Sydney Uni, but the Wanderers held firm.
They responded with a powerful shot from Vanderlaan, which seemed destined for the back of the net, only for a timely defensive block and a save off the deflection to deny them.
The 76th minute saw arguably the chance of the game as Vanderlaan was one on one with Sofia Fante who had stepped off her line. Unfortunately for the Wanderers, the shot went wide of the goal.
Zumaya had a chance to snatch a late equaliser, but a stunning save from Fonte denied her. The Wanderers were then awarded a stoppage-time corner, presenting another opportunity for the Red and Black.
However, Vanderlaan’s attempt from point-blank range was skewed wide, and the chance to level the score slipped away.
The loss sees the Wanderers drop to seventh place, with their upcoming match against NWS Spirit this weekend now looking like a must-win. The NPL side will be eager to secure the points and avoid getting caught in the crowded mid-table logjam.
