The Western Sydney Wanderers NPL 1 side were unable to overcome competition leaders Marconi Stallions on Sunday afternoon, falling 3-0 at Marconi Stadium.
Facing one of the league’s most in-form outfits, the Wanderers produced periods of encouraging football but were ultimately punished by a clinical Marconi side that made the most of its opportunities in both halves.
The opening stages of the contest were played at a high tempo, with both teams looking to establish control through possession. Marconi enjoyed the majority of the ball in the early exchanges, while the Wanderers remained organiseddefensively and looked to threaten on the counterattack whenever opportunities presented themselves.
As the match settled into a rhythm, the hosts began to apply sustained pressure around the Wanderers’ penalty area. Despite some resolute defending from the Red & Black, Marconi found the breakthrough in the 33rd minute. After theWanderers successfully cleared an initial corner, the ball fell to Franco Maya on the edge of the area, who struck a powerful first-time effort into the bottom corner to give the league leaders a deserved advantage.
The Stallions doubled their lead just four minutes later through captain Marko Jesic. A well-worked attackingmove down the left saw Tyren Burnie deliver a low cutback into the
penalty area, where Jesic arrived to finish first time and extend the home side’s lead before the interval.
Trailing by two goals at the break, the Wanderers emerged for the second half with renewed purpose and energy. Theirimproved intensity saw them enjoy longer spells of possession and push further up the pitch in search of a route back into the contest.
The Wanderers continued to compete strongly against a disciplined Marconi defence, while goalkeeper Lucas Sinnot produced several important saves to keep his side within touching distance. His best intervention came shortly after halftime when he denied Damian Tsekenis from close range with an outstanding reflex save after the striker appeareddestined to score.
Marconi eventually put the result beyond doubt in the 74th minute. From another dangerous corner delivery, leadinggoalscorer Damian Tsekenis rose highest inside the six-yard box to head home his fifteenth goal of the season and complete a 3-0 victory for the competition leaders.
While the result was disappointing, the fixture provided another valuable learning experience for the Wanderers’ squad against one of the benchmark teams in the competition. The side
continued to display resilience and commitment throughout the ninety minutes despite facing an experienced opponent chasing the Premiership.
The Wanderers will now shift their focus to next weekend’s fixture as they look to bounce back and continue their push during the closing stages of the NPL NSW Men’s season.
