New signing Malia Steinmetz on settling in Western Sydney, her World Cup dreams and confidence levels heading into a new A-League Women’s season.
The midfielder played in her first season of the domestic competition last season with Perth Glory and featured in every single match.
Using the experience from her debut season in the competition, Steinmetz is eager to now continue learning and developing in Western Sydney.
“The competition was a great step up for me personally with playing in New Zealand and in the National Premier League 1 Sydney division,” said Steinmetz.
“It’s for sure a great platform that I’m learning so much from which will hopefully help my football career even more for the future.
“Hopefully having one season in the A-League Women’s will help bring me some more freedom and confidence in my game where I will be able to playw ith result defining moments.
“I’ve finally been able to settle in a city for longer than a few months so signing with Western Sydney was a big aim of mine at the start of this year.
“Talking to Cath (head coach Catherine Cannuli) also gave me a lot of excitement for this season and with what the team will be able to achieve.”
The 22-year-old has been a familiar face on the International Stage, having captained New Zealand in the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in France in 2018 and made her senior debut a year earlier.
With the upcoming FIFA Womens World Cup set to be on home soil in two years time, Steinmetz is eyeing up a spot in the squad.
“I am personally aiming for the 2023 FIFA Womens World Cup seeing as it is across my two current homes and it would be an amazing experience,” said Steinmetz.
“Club-wise, I want to be part of the success I can see the team having this year, where I know a Top 4 spot is on.”
