Western Sydney Wanderers were edged 2-1 by Wellington Phoenix in Christchurch, with Brandon Borrello on the scoresheet in a spirited performance that saw the visitors push until the final whistle.
Despite the result, the Wanderers showed resilience throughout the contest, responding strongly after conceding early and creating several opportunities across both halves, particularly through periods of sustained pressure in the second half.
Wellington opened the scoring in the 15th minute through Ifeanyi Eze, who finished from close range after a well-worked attacking move.
The Wanderers, however, worked their way into the contest and found their equaliser just before the break when captain for the night Borrello calmly finished from a set-piece routine involving Angus Thurgate and Ryan Fraser, ensuring the sides went into half-time locked at 1-1.
The Wanderers carried that momentum into the second half, with Fraser, Thurgate and Bozhidar Kraev all involved in attacking passages that tested the Phoenix defence.
Young forward Jai Rose also had a promising chance late in the first half, reflecting the team’s continued willingness to push forward.
Wellington regained the lead in the 56th minute through Kazuki Nagasawa, who headed home from a Tim Payne delivery. From there, Western Sydney continued to press, with Fraser particularly lively, forcing saves from distance and linking play effectively in the final third.
Late pressure saw the Wanderers go close to finding a second equaliser, but the Phoenix held on in a tight finish.
The Wanderers now turn their attention to their final fixture of the 2025/26 Isuzu UTE A-League season, where they return home to CommBank Stadium to face Melbourne Victory in front of their Members and supporters.
