The Western Sydney Wanderers have today announced Servet Uzunlar as the club’s Westfield W-League captain for the season.
The defender returned to the Red & Black this season and has made close to 80 appearances in the Westfield W-League.
Internationally, Uzunlar was part of the squad that won the Asian Cup in 2010 and domestically has won the Westfield W-League Championship and two Premiership titles.
Uzunlar was a foundation player for the Wanderers and now has hopes of guiding the Red & Black to their very first finals series.
Uzunlar’s vice-captain will be Wanderers legend Erica Halloway, who is set to play in her fourth season for the club.
Halloway has been previously named the Wanderers Westfield W-League Player of the Year and Golden Boot winner.
Wanderers Westfield W-League head coach Dan Barrett says that there are many leaders in the team and he’s proud of Servet’s hard work and natural leadership qualities.
“In my involvement in football, this has been the best pre-season I think I’ve had with a team,” said Barrett.
“We have a great group and that’s a credit to the team, it’s been hard I admit that and it’s been the hardest pre-season I’ve put on.
“Through that process, I’ve just been observing and getting to know people and for me when it comes to a captain, it’s just an armband.
“This person is already the captain – they just wear the armband to let everyone else know that they are the captain of our team.”
The Western Sydney Wanderers Westfield W-League team will open their season in a blockbuster Sydney Derby at Marconi Stadium on Thursday night.
